Transportation in Malaga

The Airport of Malaga lies 8 kilometers west of the town and is a main flight path for millions of people getting to the Costa del Sol every year. The airport can be found next to the main A7 coastal road, which links to the AP7 Autopista del Sol motorway for Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola and Marbella and Gibraltar to the west and Malaga, Nerja and Granada to the East.

Throughout the years, the airport has expanded plans to continue for further expansion, in response the continuous increase in numbers of travelers. Plans are already underway for the construction of another terminal to supplement the two currently in service. A second runway is also planned.

Flights connect to more than 60 destinations worldwide; around 12 million passengers go through the airport each year.

9 different rest points and a wide selection of bars and restaurants, bank cash points, postal and Internet services for passengers and a pharmacy can be found. However, no left luggage facility can be found.
Even an exhibition hall can be found, which shows the work of well-known Andalusian artists. It’s usually open from 10:00 - 13:30 and 17:00 - 21:00.  Exhibitions change from month to month so, if you are a frequent flyer, ask for details and see what's on if you have time to spare. There is an airport museum housed in the original (now General Aviation) terminal 10 minutes walk away.

Business people as well as holidaymakers head for Malaga and the Costa del Sol. With this in mind, Malaga Airport offers all the facilities needed for business meetings in the VIP rooms.

Malaga Airport Taxi Service

There are always plenty of Taxi's waiting for passengers at Malaga Airport, here is a guide to the cost of taxi fares from Malaga Airport.

By taxi – The local taxi service is monitored by the authorities and is a popular means of transport even for the locals. Taking a taxi means avoiding parking problems, but keep in mind that during rush hour the going may get a little slow and there could even be a shortage of taxis, especially during summertime.

By train - The train only connects Malaga with certain places such as Torremolinos, Benalmádena or Fuengirola. It is inexpensive and convenient.

By bus – A convenient form of transport to make your way around Costa del Sol. Bus services are provided by municipal networks run by the different towns and cities. Service is frequent between Malaga and the main towns of the surrounding region. It is the only public transport into the smaller surrounding villages.

By scooter - a very popular form of transportation here on the Costa del Sol, scooters are great to get around in but require diligent care. A license is needed and helmets must be worn at all times. Local authorities are especially strict about enforcement of rules regarding scooters, as the rate of accidents is very high.

By bike – A pleasant and cheap option is getting around on a bike, this permits you to enjoy the great weather and the special bike lanes on the beach promenades. Keep in mind, that this is not a safe way to travel on the busier roads and motorways. Bikes are actually prohibited on the N-340 and the A-7 motorways.

On foot – With the fantastic weather in Malaga walking can be considered an ideal thing to do. In town it solves the annoying parking problem and strolling along the beach promenades is great all year round. On the outer sides of the city, toward the countryside, going on pleasant walks in a natural setting is really relaxing.
